Frequently the focus of cosmetic improvement is the face, yet one of the most age-telling body features is our hands. The skin on the back of the hands is extremely thin, the loss of fat padding on any level shows quickly. Take away that cushion and all the structures in the hand show up – the tendons, bones and the veins.

The natural fat cushion that we are born with begins to lessen in our late twenties and early 30′s. By the time most of us hit 50, we have hands that tell the truth about our age — and often they can actually make us seem older than we are!

Radiesse can restore the volume in the dorsum of the hands that was lost due to the natural aging process via a very simple and convenient procedure. The treatment is highly effective, easy and non time-consuming and delivers long-lasting results.

Radiesse is safe, effective and extremely popular both for its immediate effectiveness and long duration. The malleability and staying power of Radiesse have turned it into something of an injectable implant. It can be injected into the cheek and chin area to provide a nonsurgical implant that’s completely natural looking.

What is Radiesse® and how does it work?

​

Radiesse is made up of tiny beads of calcium hydroxylapatite and has FDA approval. Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa) has been safely used in the body for many reasons including dental applications where bone build-up is needed for reconstruction and also in block form for cosmetic applications such as cheek, jaw, cranial and chin implants.

Radiesse is not a permanent filler. It is a long lasting, resorbable filler – with the effect claimed to last approximately 2 years depending on the client and the area treated.

​

Once injected into your skin, the smooth and spherical CaHA particles form a ‘scaffold’ which stimulates your own cells to produce collagen around the spheres. The gel carrier dissolves within a few months and over time, the CaHA particles gradually break down and are completely metabolised by the body, leaving only the new collagen structure.

​

Radiesse wears well in the hands and provides an instant cushion replacement. The depressions between the tendons and veins are refilled so both the bony appearance and the vein prominences (and the dark color of the veins) are reduced, giving your hands a softer, fuller appearance that signifies youth.

The procedure

​

Injections in the back of the hands might be assumed to be painful, but in reality the procedure is virtually painless. It generally takes less than 30 minutes to inject both hands.

​

Prior to the treatment: Our specialist doctor will complete a medical examination and discuss the individual treatment plan for you.

Treatment: The Radiesse is mixed with Lidocaine aneasthetic prior to use so that the nerve endings in the skin are anesthetized. A “bolus” or “ball” of Radiesse is injected and then massaged into the volume-deficient areas. The product is easily massaged into place, and remains in those areas so the skin is smooth and even.

Post Treatment: Most people find that they can return to work the following day after this procedure. With any dermal filler treatment, there is a risk of post treatment effects such as slightly swelling and bruising. These affects are normal and usually subside within a few days.

​

After Care: Keep the treated area clean and avoid touching or put any product on for 6 hours after the treatment. Specfic after care instructions will be provided and discussed with you during your visit by our Clinic Coordinator.

Will I see the results immediately?

​

The treatment provides an immediate result. However, the hands may swell slightly. This means that the result directly after the treatment may not be the final result. The swelling typically resolves spontaneously within a couple of days. To achieve the result you want it is recommended to have a touch-up treatment 2 to 4 weeks after the initial session. This will also add to the duration of the treatment effect.

How long will the results last?

​

The result generally last 12 months or even longer. The longevity of these products is variable and each individual may obtain a different result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.

Recovery time

​

There is very little to no down-time involved in the procedure. In fact, most patients return to their normal, daily activities right after their visit.

​

What are the possible cosmetic side effects?

After the treatment(s) some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site but generally they are not significant. These typically resolve spontaneously within 2 to 10 days.

Mild bruising or a slight blush might appear at the injection site immediately following treatment and may last for 2-10 days.

All of the below increase bruising. To avoid swelling and bruising, you should avoid taking:

Aspirin, Exedrin, ibuprofen, Aleve or Advil for 1 week before and 2 days after. Tylenol is always fine.
Vitamin E (or multivitamin) or St. John’s Wort for 2-3 days before or after.
Avoid exercise except for walking for 24 hours after the procedure.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the main components of the skin that helps give it a radiant look.  As we age the skin's ability to produce hyaluronic acid decreases and can result in drier and thinner skin with a dull complexion. Other factors, including diet and over exposure to the sun may also contribute to dry skin lacking a youthful complexion.  Restylane Skinboosters can be used by aesthetic healthcare practitioners as part of an aesthetic programme to help revitalise and hydrate the skin.

How do Restylane Skinboosters work?
 
 - The first step is to find a qualified aesthetic healthcare professional. Restylane treatments should only be administered by a trained medical healthcare professional.

 - At your first appointment your practitioner will have an in-depth consultation to assess your needs.  Before any Restylane Skinbooster treatment, your practitioner will provide you a treatment plan and ensure you know what to expect from a treatment.

​

 - Before treatment your practitioner will take your medical history and consent.

​

- During a treatment your aesthetic healthcare practitioner will give a series of tiny injections into the skin, made more comfortable with an anaesthetic called lidocaine included in the products using a very fine needle or cannula.  These hydrating micro-droplets of Restylane Vital or Restylane Vital Light , will after an initial course of treatments give visible improvements in the skin's appearance.

 - After treatment your practitioner will advise you on aftercare.  Some people experience some post-treatment discomfort, such as redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the treatment site.  This typically subsides after a few days but may last up to two weeks.

​

 - Follow-up appointments will be arranged as part of your treatment plan.  An initial course of 3 treatments, each approximately 4 weeks apart is recommended as part of your initial treatment plan.  Follow up appointments following your initial treatment programme usually occur after 6 months in order to maintain your results.
